Masaan, a movie starring Richa Chadda, Vicky Kaushal, Sanjay Mishra and Shweta Tripathi has been getting a lot of praise from the Bollywood fraternity. The latest to join the bandwagon is Parineeti Chopra who said  that she cried a lot inside the theatre after watching the movie. While crying after or watching a movie has become a trend in Bollywood (with a big towel at hand), Neeraj Ghaywan’s movie also won international accolades and awards at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is set to hit the theatres on Friday, July 24.

Others who have liked the movie include Rajkumar Hirani, Kabir Khan, Shabanana Azmi, Dia Mirza and Anurag Kashyap.

Ghaywan had been an assistant for Kashyap’s movies like Ugly and Gangs of Wasseypur. He had told PTI earlier in an interview when the movie got a standing ovation at Cannes: “I wish I could say that I dreamt about this day but honestly I did not even dream of it. I was just excited to be at Cannes with people who inspired me like Vikramaditya Motwane whose Udaan was screened on 19 May in 2010, the same day we had our screening.”

"The recognition is for people like Anurag Kashyap, Guneet Monga, Manish Mundra and many others who have been fighting so long for the growth of independent cinema with minimal resources, money and against the current of Bollywood. I told Anurag, 'Your mentoring has led to this'," he said.

Kashyap for his part loved the movie so much, that he had tweeted that he wished he had directed the movie. Kashyap, who is a producer of the movie, had tweeted: “Twice we have produced a film that i wished i had directed. First was "Udaan" by VM and now "Masaan" by @ghaywan. Both screened on the the same day in "un certain regard" five years apart from each other.”

Lyricist Javed Akhtar was also impressed saying: “It is one of the finest films Hindi cinema has made. It is perfect. The performance, direction, camera work, acting, writing were all unbelievable. It’s a very good film from any standard in the world.”

Kalki Koelchin had also tweeted: “It is one of the finest films Hindi cinema has made. It is perfect. The performance, direction, camera work, acting, writing were all unbelievable. It’s a very good film from any standard in the world.”

Masaan’s plot revolves around the lives of four characters. Richa’s character faces the brunt of a sexual encounter gone wrong, while Shweta’s character struggles with the social hurdles when she falls in love with a boy (Vicky) who belongs to a lower caste and burns dead bodies for a living.

Will the audience love the movie as much as the film fraternity? Only time will tell.
