Pregnant woman hurt as lift plunges at AIIMS

A 28-year-old pregnant woman and four other people were injured when an elevator at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) came crashing down from the second floor on Saturday morning. The woman, Sweta, a resident of Kalkaji, has been admitted to the trauma centre and has surfaced fractures on her left leg.

The AIIMS Director has constituted a committee under the Medical Superintendent to look into the lift failure and recommend appropriate measures. "There were 20 persons in the lift, including an operator and a hospital staff, when the accident occurred around 9.30 am.

The official said lift Number 17 at the Medical Support Office (MSO) failed to stop on the way to the ground floor from the second floor and went straight into the lift pit, which has buffer springs. According to senior police officers, it was around 11.08 am in (MSO) when lift number 17 collapsed while elevating above second floor. Hospital staff and witnesses also told police that the they heard the screams of the victims following a loud sound as the elevator fell with five occupants in it.

Confirming the incident, DCP south, Romil Baaniya said that the injured were identified as RK Aggarwal (62) from Aligarh, a visitor at the hospital, the lift operator Hemant (44), Sweta (28) a resident of Bihar and a gynae-patient, Sashikant (50) from Jharkhand, a patient attendant) and one Taslim Ali (28), a staff of 'Shulabh' company.

A case under IPC section 287 (Negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) was registered and the incident is being probed.
