The Gautam Budh Nagar Police have arrested the main accused, in connection with the murder of the Bharatiya Janata Party worker, from the Salarpur underpass in the Noida area of Gautam Budh Nagar on Wednesday morning.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Deepak Verma, a relative of a person contesting the municipal elections scheduled later in November. Deepak allegedly shot Sagar Sharma with his licensed revolver.

"Yesterday (on Tuesday) we had formed different teams to nab the accused as he was absconding. We had got information that he is trying to escape the city. A team was formed and he was nabbed from the Salarpur underpass in the morning at around 7 am," said Piyush Kumar Singh, Circle Officer – 2, Greater Noida.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that he was drunk and had gone to meet Sagar. Later, the two had an argument in which he lost his cool and shot Sagar.

"He said that he didn't have any intentions to kill Sagar as the two were good friends. He had gone to meet Sagar along with his brother, Manoj. While talking, the two disagreed on something due to which Sagar abused him. He then lost his cool and took out his revolver and shot him," Singh added.

On Monday night at around 11.30 pm, according to the complaint filed by Sharma's brother, Abhimanyu, both of them were sitting at a tent house near their house. Later on, they got a call from their family and left for their homes.

"While heading back Manoj and Deepak came from behind and took Sharma about 200 meters away on the pretext of some work. They had an argument and later the argument got ugly. Suddenly, Manoj held him from behind and Deepak took out his revolver and shot him. The two then fled the spot," said Abhimanyu."

Sharma was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. "Deepak was produced before the court and have been sent to jail while Manoj was arrested on Monday and sent to jail on Tuesday," said a senior police officer.

Police have recovered the pistol used in the crime from his possession and police have dismissed the reports of the incident of being a fallout of political rivalry.
