The residents of various sectors of the city have defied the prohibitory order and stopped the work of the waste-to-energy plant in Sector 123. The residents of several sectors and neighbouring villages first gathered at Parthala village to devise the way forward in their protest against the dump site and then marched towards the landfill because of which the work was stopped. Residents say that they have to save their homes, future and call peace bonds as illegal.
However, on Saturday, the district administration had issued a notice to 36 people to maintain law and order and refrain from the disruption of construction work of the landfill in the sector.
According to the residents of Sector 117-122, they will not let the Noida Authority materialise its plan to build a waste-to-energy plant on a 25-acre land in Sector 123. Though, the Noida Authority started digging the vacant plot situated there on Friday after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued an interim order on May 29 directing it to immediately stop dumping waste at a forest located in Sector 54.
"We will fight till the end and make sure that the dump yard is not built here. We can't let the Authority take the future and health of our children in its hand. Our children will question us in the future about what we did when we had time to fight for our rights," said Abhay Pandey, a resident of sector 121.
After seeing a massive protest, residents of some other sectors also joined in large numbers.
"This is not just a fight of few residents, this is the city's fight and we will fight it all together. We did not want any landfill or waste-to-energy plant in the city and if the Authority wants to build it then they should do it outside the city. We do not want mishaps like the one that happened at Gazipur in Delhi," said Neha Anand, a resident of Sector 71.
Residents said that the city generates 650-tonne garbage every day and with the population increasing they will not be able to cope with the waste generated. The Authority has not thought about the future.
According to a senior official, no work was harmed on Sunday and it was an off day while the work will resume on Monday and if anyone is found disrupting the construction work, strict action will be taken against them.
