A 42-year-old daily wage labourer was killed and a two-year-old girl living in the same locality sustained minor injuries after the two were hit by a speeding car in west Delhi's Tilak Nagar area on Saturday. The accused taxi driver has been arrested.

The deceased was identified as Lallan and the injured girl as Komal. According to the police, the accused, Hari Gupta, 26, was speeding through a slum area when he hit Komal, who was playing there with her friends.

"Locals said the driver managed to slow down the car and the girl was not hit badly. Seeing that she had escaped with minor injuries, the drive tried to speed away but the locals had surrounded his car. The accused then panicked, pressed on the accelerator and hit Lallan, who was trying to stop the vehicle. Lallan sustained serious injuries. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital," a senior police officer said.

Komal was also taken to hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.

"A case under Sections 304 A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash and negligent driving), and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) was registered at the Tilak Nagar police station and the driver was arrested. Medical examination would ascertain whether he was drunk at the time of the incident," police said.
