A vagabond mistaken as an intruder triggered panic at the Indira Gandhi International airport when he attempted to scale the perimeter wall of the airport during the early hours on Monday. Reacting to the security breach, armed Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) commandos were rushed to the spot to secure the IGI, one of the country's hyper sensitive airports.

The trigger was sparked around 1.30 am, when alert CISF personnel noticed some suspicious movement on the perimeter wall and alerted officers concerned. A senior CISF officer told DNA that Perimeter Intrusion Detection System that secures the boundary of the airport raised an alarm as the man tried to jump inside.

"The movement was spotted near watch tower 35 in zone number 448. Since his identity was not known, it was a major security concern. The team immediately called in a quick response team and armed commandos were rushed to sanitise the area. The team found a man climbing on the perimeter wall. When he was brought down he appeared to be of unsound mind. After verifications, he was handed over to Delhi Police," the officer said.

CISF officers also said that with repetitive terror attacks being reported from all around the world, security at the IGI has significantly been stepped up.

However, this is not the first incident when such an intrusion has sparked panic among the security forces at Delhi airport, which is counted under the hypersensitive airports across the country.

In April, DNA had exclusively reported how a suspicious man sneaked into the Palam Air Force station at the IGI airport side and reached up to the sensitive technical area, giving slip to the multi-layered security cover. The incident had triggered panic among intelligence agencies as the man was caught in the "prohibited area" of the airbase.

Moreover, the Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS), that secures the boundary of the IGI airport, has remained a controversial installation since it was developed four years ago in accordance with guidelines laid down by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The Intrusion Detection System, a multi-layer security system with around 200 CCTV cameras to capture even the slightest movement near the boundary, generates more than 100 false alarms a day, claims CISF. The system also has radars, more than 35 watchtowers and a patrolling track along the 25km perimeter wall of the airport.
