Delhi Police have arrested a cheat from Bengaluru who targeted people whose credit card expiry dates were approaching and lured them in revealing the card details on the pretext of extending the validity of their cards for next five years. The accused was working with Bengaluru Metro as the security supervisor, police said.

The 26-year-old resident of Deoghar in Jharkhand has been identified as Pradeep Pandit alias Munna. The forgery came to light on March 20, when a complainant reported that he had received a telephone call from one unknown person who enquired from him about the expiry of his credit card and further induced him to part with One Time Password (OTP) received on his phone for extending the validity of the card for the next five years.

“Believing his words, the complainant released his OTP number. However, he soon realized that it was a trap, and an amount of Rs 68,970 was immediately debited from his card. Upon which, a case of cheating was registered and the investigation was taken up. The Cyber Cell of Dwarka District contacted the complainant and sought information regarding the OTP received on his mobile phone. On the basis of OTP, it was learnt that the cheated amount has been fraudulently transferred to Flipkart. Further, the nodal officer of Flipkart was contacted who informed that three Oppo F3 Plus mobile phones have been booked against the cheated amount to be delivered in Bengaluru,” said Shibesh Singh, DCP Dwarka.

Singh said, without any delay, a team was sent to Bengaluru and in co-ordination with Flipkart, Pandit was arrested and three branded new mobile phones were recovered from him.

“The accused was produced before the court in Bengaluru and brought to Delhi on transit remand. In the present case, the cheater has fraudulently cheated the complainant of Delhi while he himself was sitting in Jharkhand and the product was to be delivered in Bengaluru,” the DCP said.
