Five days after the Centre announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, the common man continues to bear the brunt, waiting for life to get back into normal gear. Standing in serpentine queues outside ATMs is just one part of the many grievances people have against the sudden move as many complain that doing routine chores like grocery shopping has become impossible in wake of limited cash inflow. From working professionals to housewives to labourers, every one has his or her tale of woe to narrate even as the government is giving repeated assurance that it has enough money to go around in ATMs and one needs to press panic button.

I am awaiting my salary because a lot of people I work for are themselves stuck with limited cash. I am worried about my children back home in my village in West Bengal. I send all my savings to them for their studies in cash. I dont know how they will manage now. It may be a positive move but it has created a lot of trouble for aam aadmi like us.

I am a daily-wage labourer. I am carrying three Rs 1,000 notes with me and didn't get time to stand in long queues outside the banks to get them changed. I am scared thinking that if I go the banks, I will lose my half-day wage. Last night, my family had nothing to eat.
—Satvir Singh, 28, a daily-wage labourer

I earn Rs 1,500-2,000 daily, but from last three days, I'm hardly earning Rs 500 a day. I sell home-made kebabs and matthi (sweets) near Jama Masjid. But thanks to governments decision, we are not even having tourists these days. Last night, I distributed unsold kebabs among street children.

I was travelling in the metro when the demotization of high value notes was announced. Unaware of the fact, I reached home but luckily we had some cash at home. I think people should not crib and be patient. Our government has taken this decision for the betterment of nation.
