According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Motilal Goel, a resident of Ghaziabad, who was shot at several times while he was supervising the construction work of a commercial plaza near Salarpur road.
A 61-year-old, famous land mafia accused of land grabbing worth Rs 2,500 crore, was shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne miscreants in the Hindon Vihar area of Sector 49 here on Monday evening. Prima facie, the police suspect it a case of an old property and land dispute.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Motilal Goel, a resident of Ghaziabad, who was shot at several times while he was supervising the construction work of a commercial plaza near Salarpur road. Police said around 7-8 bullets were shot at him from point-blank range after which he collapsed and fell on the ground.
"The incident took place around 4:30 pm when two criminals on a Bajaj Pulsar, parked the bike outside the boundary wall of the plot and entered the premises. The assailants took out pistols and sprayed bullets at Goel. The construction workers at the plot fled after hearing the gunshots," said Arun Kumar Singh, superintendent of police (City), Noida.
Locals informed the police about the incident and a team reached the spot where Goel was lying in a pool of blood. Police rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
According to a hospital official, Goel received a bullet in his head and some bullets in his abdomen area.
"We have sent the body for post-mortem examination and reports are awaited. We have recovered seven used cartridges from the spot. While we suspect that three bullets have hit Goel," Singh said.
Police said that prima facie it appears to be a case of land dispute. Goel was involved in a number of land grabbing incidents in past. However, the investigations are underway to ascertain the actual reason behind the murder.

- Goel was facing about a dozen criminal cases being prosecuted by the CBI. He had been in Dasna jail for over a decade in connection with land scams totalling almost Rs 2,500 crore.
