Officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) were in for a surprise recently when two brothers, aged 12 and 14, arrived at a ticket counter to buy tickets to the United States. The two kids were carrying nearly Rs 2 lakh to fund their travel.

When questioned, they revealed that they had run away from their home in Imphal in Manipur, after an argument with their parents. The authorities then called the Delhi Police, and the family of the children was informed.

The incident was reported on Wednesday, when the duo arrived from Imphal by Air India flight AI 890 at 6.25 pm. They were spotted loitering around the airline's domestic ticketing lounge at Terminal 1D by the authorities.

"The CISF men deployed at the terminal approached the two boys after their movements were found to be suspicious. Questioning revealed that they were not accompanied by any guardian and had travelled to Delhi alone. They wanted to board a flight to the US," a senior officer said.

The kids showed tickets of their flight from Imphal to Delhi but did not have any valid document to buy tickets to the US. The CISF personnel then informed Delhi Police, which in turn approached their family. Officials verified the credentials of the children by calling up their parents after taking the telephone number from them.

"The parents said the brothers had left the house without informing anyone, following which a missing complaint was registered at the Moirang Bishnupur police station in Imphal. When the boys' bags were checked, around Rs 1.94 lakh in new currency notes, some clothes, and books were recovered," officer said.

Meanwhile, a woman who introduced herself as a relative of one of the boys called and said they took the money from their grandmother's house. "She said she would send a person named Rohit to take custody of the boys. The boys were handed over to the police, who reunited them with their family, after following due procedure," officer said.
