Drug mafias of Punjab have struck a new alliance with peddlers from north eastern states who are using a new route via Myanmar border to deliver consignments up to Punjab, a kingpin of a drug syndicate arrested by the Delhi Police has revealed.

The police claims that he told his interrogators that after the crackdown post Pathankot attack this is the new modus operandi which these syndicates have been resorting to.

Last year's terror attack on the Pathankot Air Force base exposed the gaps in security along the India-Pakistan border as the route taken by terrorists was the same used by drug syndicates.

The arrested accused has been identified as 45-year-old Nazir Hussain alias Nizam alis Nizamuddin, who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000. Sanjeev Yadav, DCP Special Cell said that the interrogations revealed that Nizam used to collect opium and heroin from various small cultivators in north-east and the same was supplied to various middle-men located in Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR using trucks and other heavy vehicles to avoid detection by intelligence agencies.

"It is also revealed that these middle-men were regular customers, who used to place orders on phone and money used to be transferred both through banks and cash. The accused disclosed that he had earlier made several trips to UP and Delhi-NCR to supply opium to various middle-men. This time he has come to make contact with his earlier arrested associates, who are lodged in Delhi jails," Yadav said.

Nizam's role as a kingpin of the drug syndicate came to fore when the Special Cell had arrested five traffickers from Shahjahanpur last year and recovered 69 kilos of high grade opium worth several crores. Investigations revealed that Nizam is the kingpin of the drug cartel.

On Friday, information was received that Nizam will be reaching Delhi by a train from Guwahati and will get down at Anand Vihar Railway Station.

"A team of Special Cell boarded the same train from Ghaziabad station apprehended the accused before he could get off. His interrogations revealed states like Manipur, Assam, Nagaland have become a major source of supply of opium and heroin to Punjab via UP and Delhi-NCR. He also stated that North-East States are now the biggest hub for supply of these drugs to rest of North India, which are manufacturing them locally as well as smuggling from Myanmar," Yadav said.

It was also revealed that these middle- men were regular customers, who used to place orders on phone and money used to be transferred both through banks and cash.
