In what might come as a surprise to many, the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Yogesh Tyagi takes just Re 1 as salary from the university.

This information was given by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in a written response to a question in Parliament on Thursday.

A question was put in Parliament asking whether the VC has submitted his PAN card and Aadhaar card details to the university in the past two years and whether he has received any salary from the university during this period.

Replying to the question, Minister of State for HRD Satyapal Singh said, "The Delhi University has informed that the Vice-Chancellor has submitted copies of his PAN card and Aadhaar card to the university and he has chosen to take just Re 1 as salary from the university."

It was also asked whether he has paid any income tax on the salary that he has received so far, to which the minister replied, "As per the acts and rules of Income Tax, TDS is deducted from an employee's salary."

Tyagi, who took over as the VC of Delhi University from Dinesh Singh in March 2016 had at the beginning of his term proposed to take honorary Re 1 as salary from the university. This was, however, just source-based information as there was no official word on it. It is only after the MoS HRD made a statement in response to the question in Parliament that it became public.

While sources in the university said that they had an idea about this, senior officials including the registrar and deputy registrar refused to comment on the matter.

DEPUTATION BASIS

Yogesh Tyagi had joined the Delhi University on a deputation basis from the South Asian University, which comes under the Ministry of External Affairs.
