In a bid to prevent an outbreak of vector-borne diseases in the city, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led municipal corporations in Delhi are all set to write to the Lieutenant Governor (LG), seeking action regarding Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) leaking pipelines.

The leakage leads to accumulation of water, which encourages mosquito breeding. Larvae of dengue and chikungunya breed in fresh water. According to the civic body, mosquitoes breed mainly in artificially collected clean water in desert coolers, uncovered storage containers, overhead tanks, old tyres, etc.

The matter was taken up for discussion in the House meeting on Wednesday. The corporations have identified 20 such leakage spots each.

"We plan to write to the LG. The DJB must fix its leaking pipelines, which, besides being a waste of fresh water, also allows mosquito breeding. These areas mostly remain neglected and even fumigation is not done there," a senior South Corporation official said.

Some of the areas identified, so far, include Bara Hindu Rao, Tyre market, Paharganj, Bawana, Rohini, and Nizamuddin, among others.

"We are preparing a list of these spots. We will hand it over to the LG as well as the DJB in the coming week. We will ask them to investigate these places and fix the leakages," an official said.

Meanwhile, last year, the DJB had fixed some of its leaking pipelines after residents complained of water being accumulated and mosquitoes breeding in it. Also, last year saw the worst outbreak of chikungunya, with nearly 7,760 cases, while in 2015, dengue broke records with 15,867 cases.

ANALYSIS

Last year saw the vector-borne diseases reaching epidemic proportions. It is crucial to identify places, besides households and commercial units, where fresh water is being collected The BJP-led corporations need to prepare well so as to not repeat its last year's poor performance.
