Starting today, Defence Minister and Delhi election incharge for the BJP Nirmala Sitharaman will conduct 'popularity test' of the seven MPs, an exercise which is a precursor to finalising candidates for upcoming Lok Sabha elections. 'Lok Sabha Pravesh' as it is titled will assess the elected representatives on various parameters, the results of which will have a bearing on fielding them again.

Nirmala will take feedback from different party functionaries like mandal president, ward councillors, sitting MLAs, Lok Sabha prabharis and even councillors and legislators who lost elections. According to sources, during the interactive session which is likely to last for a few hours, she will only listen to the party members and not address the gathering. Senior Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajesh Bhatia said, "West Delhi is the first constituency that Nirmala will cover where she will meet everyone in the hierarchy of the party structure." Son of former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma Parvesh Sahib Singh represents this constituency.

She will visit North West and Chandni Chowk on Wednesday. These are represented by Dr Udit Raj and Dr Harshvardhan respectively. Nirmala will be accompanied by co-incharge Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya. The exercise is expected to complete in a week and the feedback will be sent to national party president Amit Shah. The timing of the development assumes significance as speculations are rife that the party may drop some of the sitting MPs in the impending general elections.

The BJP is gearing up to take on Aam Aadmi Party and Congress together. The local wing has already slotted 13,500 booths depending on their ability to secure a win for the party. Those in category D are those where the BJP has never won, C is for uncertain areas. While type B is for booths where the party has won with thin margin and type A is for booths where they have registered comfortable win.

A similar survey was conducted by the party in September last year to gauge the public mood with an eye on the LS polls. The questionnaire assessed the MPs on work done by them, ease of accessibility and popularity.
