A four-year-old girl was found dead near her home in the Keshavpuram area of north-west Delhi on Monday. She had been missing since Saturday. Prima facie, it appeared that the minor was sexually assualted before being killed.

Police have identified the two youths who kidnapped her. They are currently absconding. The accused, who live in the same neighbourhood, had even joined the search party looking for the girl.

On Saturday, the victim was playing outside her home with her siblings, when all of a sudden, she could not be found anywhere. Her mother then raised an alarm and alerted the neighbours. The police were informed and the entire neighbourhood started looking for the girl.

A passerby spotted the girl's body in a dingy room near the railway tracks on Monday morning .

The CCTV footage recovered from a nearby factory showed the accused playing with the girl behind a truck and then taking her away. "When we saw the footage, we realised that the boys had joined us in looking for her. I had fed her dinner just before she went to play. I never imagined that this would be her last meal. I think she was sexually assaulted. She had injury marks on her neck and face,"said an inconsolable mother.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere said: "The body bore strangulation marks. We are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death. Further investigation is underway."

Codemning the incident, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal said: "A four-year-old girl was raped and murdered by men in their 20s in Keshavpuram. How low will the humanity stoop? Delhi is so unsafe for women and girls. No committee is working towards making the city safe. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) disbanded the Special Task Force (STF), and directed the Lieutenant Governor (LG) to form a committee, which hasn't been done. Even the Chief Secretary has held no meeting regarding women's safety since the last year. The system continues to be unaccountable."
