Fans of the great Sachin Tendulkar can heave a sigh of relief as the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) has decided to 'unofficially' retire the legend's No.10 jersey.

The Master Blaster, who donned the No.10 jersey in ODIs for the better part of his illustrious career, retired from all forms of international cricket in November, 2013.

Ever since then, only speedster Shardul Thakur had the number on his jersey for a brief period. That, however, didn't go down well with Sachin's long legion of fans who trolled Thakur mercilessly on social media. Even the youngster's Mumbai state-mate Rohit Sharma took a subtle dig at him on Twitter then.

"It's a very individual choice. If players don't want to wear a certain number, one can't force them. ICC might just tell you that a team can't officially retire a jersey but it would never tell you that it's mandatory to wear that number," said a BCCI.

"The BCCI has not taken any such call (retiring the No.10 jersey). It's a very informal thing among players. Also you don't want young players to be abused like it happened with Shardul Thakur," he added referring to the trolling Thakur was subjected to for wearing the number.

The decision was reportedly taken in agreement with the top players from the Indian team.

Mumbai Indians, the team Sachin represented in the Indian Premier League, retired the No.10 jersey once he bid adieu to the game in 2013.

Retiring numbers worn by iconic players is a common practice across sports from around the world. From basketball stars Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, to soccer legend Diego Maradona, many athletes have witnessed their jersey numbers being retired by their respective clubs and countries.
