The newest addition to the One-Day International (ODI) club, Nepal, will embark its new journey on Wednesday when they take on Netherlands in their maiden ODI at the VRA Ground, Amstelveen.

Recently, the likes of Ireland and Afghanistan made their first steps into Test cricket and now it’s Nepal’s turn to do the same in the 50-over format.

Nepal and Netherlands are going to lock horns in a two-match ODI series, starting Wednesday. The second game will be played on Friday.

When you talk about Nepal, a lot of people are aware of just two faces – their skipper Paras Khadka and teenage leg-spinner, Sandeep Lamichhane, who earned more limelight when he made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut with Delhi Daredevils earlier this year.

However, Nepal is more than these two. There is a fair bit of experience in the ranks, with the likes of Shakti Gauchan, Basant Regmi, Sompal Kami, Sharad Vesawkar, Gyanendra Malla and others having served Nepal cricket well for long.

Speaking about the journey, Khada said, “This has been such a long, amazing journey for Nepal cricket but playing our first-ever One-Day Internationals against the Netherlands is only the beginning.

We have always wanted to get to this point but the challenge is to keep on growing. Eight years ago we were playing in ICC World Cricket League Division Five and now we are among the top 16 nations in the world, with ODI status guaranteed for the next four years.”

He added, “I hope we can keep this going and continue to grow because our next goal is to become a Test-playing country. We have worked hard for ODI status and the games against the Netherlands are opportunities for us to explore ourselves, enjoy the experience and hopefully put up good performances.”
