Brie Larson wasn’t a threat to B-Town superstars until last Friday. But she has made her presence felt. While the Academy Award winner has probably not heard of many of the Bollywood actors whose movies she has stumped, the Hindi film heroes, in turn, sure know who she is. After all, she packed quite a punch at the box office. Her Captain Marvel slowed down the stride of many desi movies. The film was eagerly awaited as it leads up to the big bang that Avengers: Endgame is expected to be. Some were sceptical whether this female superhero would receive as hearty a welcome as her male counterparts. But those doubts were laid to rest when it went on to get one of the biggest openings a foreign film has garnered.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted, “#CaptainMarvel grabs a major chunk of market share, despite mixed reports... Fantastic weekend places it amongst the biggest openers (#Hollywood)... Fri Rs 13.01 cr, Sat Rs 14.10 cr, Sun Rs 13.60 cr (affected due to cricket match). Total: Rs 40.71 cr. India biz. Gross BOC: Rs 48.47 cr. (sic).”

While the distributors and theatre owners have no reasons to complain, movies like Gully Boy (Ranveer Singh), Total Dhamaal (Ajay Devgn) and Luka Chuppi (Kartik Aaryan) were badly dented.

THE HOLLYWOOD THREAT

At an event last year, Amitabh Bachchan acknowledged that Hollywood can’t be ignored anymore. The legend said that in 1993 when he was in New York, he was told at a discussion that Indian filmmakers better get their house in order because the Americans are coming. While Hollywood movies strangulated local cinema in many countries, it wasn’t a major threat to desi movies. That, however, changed when the Marvel universe brought out their gang of superheroes. The Avengers series, which saw all of them unite, did more business than many Hindi films that released alongside it. The Big B had also said that the young actors today realise the competition that they face. He added that filmmakers don’t just have to make an entertaining fare, but they also have to match the standards of technology, VFX, etc, which has been set by international movies.

HOLDING FORT

While the business of earlier releases slowed down, the Hindi cinema icon’s thriller, Badla, picked pace. “The successful phase continues... Both, #Badla and #CaptainMarvel have scored at the BO... The *combined* weekend biz is Rs 63.91 cr... Diametrically opposite in terms of genre, the numbers prove, yet again, that two films can co-exist in a week... Even in a non-holiday week,” Taran pointed out.
