Palace Grounds witnessed a celebratory event that was also a ‘thanksgiving’ ceremony to chief minister BS Yeddyurappa. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) organised the grand event to express its gratitude to the chief minister for all the moves that his government has initiated to benefit the Kannada film industry.

Among the developments that the Yeddyurappa government is credited with having performed to protect and aid Sandalwood are the introduction of the Goonda Act to prevent audio and video piracy and the establishment of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy —thus meeting the quarter of a century demand.

The government has also made grants to support film-making in Kannada language, and exempted all Kannada films from entertainment tax. Sandalwood, buoyed by these initiatives, organised a massive event on Tuesday to acknowledge its debt to the Yeddyurappa government — there were plays, songs and dance. Renowned actors like Radhika Pandit, Pooja Gandhi, Bhavana, Neethu, Aindrita Ray and others were part of the live performances that marked the occasion. Nimmindale, Kanasella Nanasu Aghidhe, a song-and-dance sequence was scripted and performed exclusively for this function. Plays and a musical concert were performed by senior Kannada actors; music director Guru Kiran took the lead.

A laser show directed by Ramesh Arvind and Tara was part of the evening’s programme. All of Sandalwood was portrayed in the show, and it was connected to the chief minister too in a unique manner. The audience was a special one too —only people from within the state’s film industry, officials and media people were admitted.

Apart from chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, ministers Katta Subramanya Naidu, R Ashok and Suresh Kumar were also felicitated by the film industry.

The chief minister said, “We are thankful to the Kannada film industry for their love and affection. We are also happy that the film industry and the KFCC extended the government such staunch support at the time of the debate around the unveiling of the Thiruvalluvar statue in the state. On issues of land, language and water, there can be no compromise. We will extend all support to the Kannada film industry and protect its growth and its audiences. However, my only request to the Kannada film industry is that movies be made in keeping with the interests of audiences, so that the films nurture healthy youth. Very soon, I intend to solve the problem of the ‘Karmikara Nidhi’ — we will provide funds for the building. In future too, any demands that the KFCC place before the government will get a sympathetic hearing. I will be ready for any help.”

Despite the presence of a host of luminaries and the need for high security in the area, the programme did not cause traffic jams near Palace Grounds. The entire  programme was meticulously planned and executed.
