A fast-track court in Mangalore has ordered that Vilasini, whom her husband and his paramour had confined to a room for 20 years, be released immediately and sent to hospital.

The court has asked Vilasini’s husband, Suresh Raj, to admit her to a hospital. Also, the court sought doctors’ report on her condition within a week.

The order comes in the wake of an application filed by Vilasini’s daughter Sheen Sathish and son-in-law Sathish. Vilasini married Raj, a Mangalore-based businessman, in 1979 and was crowned the Jaycee beauty queen of Mangalore soon after.

Her life turned dark after another woman entered their life.

Manorama, a married woman, dumped her husband and one-year-old daughter and began an affair with Raj.

Vilasini had inherited wealth from her father. Using that money, Raj built a large house in Mangalore, whose value is about `3 crore today, claim people close to the family of Vilasini. Her daughter said jewellery, bank deposits and other investments were registered in her mother’s name. The property is valued at `2 crore. She alleged that her father and Manorama tried to usurp the wealth.

“We are not worried about the riches. The plight of my mother is more worrying. She has already spent over 20 years in confinement,” she said. The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has taken up the cause of releasing Vilasini.

“It is an inhuman act of confining a young lady to a dark room after branding her insane for no reason. We are now afraid if Suresh Raj, who is well connected with the political party in power, would do everything at his disposal to destroy the evidence and manipulate the case to his advantage,” said PB D’sa, president of the Mangalore chapter of the PUCL.

Manohar, a Bangalore-based advocate arguing for Vilasini, told DNA that the fast-track court’s order came as a great relief.

He said they would wait for the medical report on the mental and physical health of Vilasini to take further action.
