A day after 25-year-old Ganapa Bargav,  a marine engineer, jumped to death during a bungee jumping event in Paint Ball Arena on Bannerghatta Road, 30 kilometers from the city, one of the two event organisers surrendered to the police and was later let out on bail.

On Saturday afternoon, Bargav, an engineer with Chennai-based Danish Maersk shipping company gave a shot at reverse bungee after he watched two others try it out.
He had come with eight others to Bangalore after registering for the event online.

Bargav fell on to the ground from a height of 180 feet when the harness secured to his foot snapped. He succumbed to severe head injuries and multiple body injuries while he was being taken to Wockhardt Hospital on Bannerghatta Road.

Sachin Venkateshaiah, who runs Headrush, the organising company, surrendered to the Bannerghatta police on Saturday night. Police said he was produced before the Anekal Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) and was remanded to judicial custody.

“We had requested the magistrate to remand him to judicial custody till April 24, but he came out on bail by Saturday midnight,’’ said Vishwanath, assistant sub-inspector, Bannerghatta.

The other organiser, Capt SK Sheshadri, owner of CARE adventures, which is a marketing agency promoting the bungee jumping event, is still absconding.

“We have formed a team to search for him,’’ said Vishwanath.

The police have filed a case under Section 304A of the IPC against the two
organisers. On Sunday, the post-mortem examination was conducted at Victoria Hospital and the body was handed over to Bargav’s father Venkataram and brother
Sharan V.

Bargav’s family hails from Chennai and is into the distribution business. Sharan, a final year BSc student, said that his brother had informed the family that he was going to participate in such an event.

“He sought permission from my parents and they were fine with it. There was no resistance from their side as he had tried out all kinds of adventure sports earlier as well. But this was the first time that he was participating in bungee jumping. He was very passionate about adventure sports,’’ he said.

According to Sharan, Bargav was on a vacation after a seven-month work trip across Japan, China and Hong Kong.  Several attempts to get in touch with Sachin failed.
His friends and other organisers said Sachin was in a state of shock and he has accepted that he should not have allowed the reverse bungee, when it was not included in their programme agenda.

“I spoke to him after he got out on bail. He is really scared,’’ said Neeraj Malve, proprietor of the Bangalore Mountaineering Club.

The organisers had also not obtained a no-objection certificate from the police, who had asked the company not to conduct the event until the elections were over. However, Sachin went ahead with it as a lot of money was involved for organising the event. The company had also not taken any measures to put safety measures like ambulances or back-up systems in place, said the police.
