Bangalore is all set to hop on to the metro, but the series of tests and inspections on the tracks and carriages appears to prolong the wait.

The Railway Design and Standard Operations (RDSO) is busy conducting safety trial runs on Reach 1 from Byappanahalli to MG Road. The RDSO team has conducted oscillation trials, to try the emergency brake system and other technical aspects. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) hopes that by next week, the safety trials would be completed.

BLY Chavan, spokesperson of BMRCL, said that RDSO will be conducting safety oscillation trials up to June 23, after which the BMRCL will itself conduct service trials for runs totalling up to 2,500 km without passengers. He said the service trials might take anywhere between three to seven days. “The RDSO, meanwhile, will give its report to the commissioner for railway safety, who will then conduct the final inspection on whether Metro is safe as public carriage,” he added.

At the six stations on Reach 1, MG Road, Trinity Circle, Ulsoor, CMH Road, Swami Vivekananda (Old Madras Road) and Byappanahalli, work is now nearly complete. BMRCL has fitted escalators and lifts and received clearances from the Electrical Inspectorate.

However, a few things remain — the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services (KSFES) still have to grant clearance stating precautionary measures in case of fire and emergency are adequate. Senior officials in the KSFES said, “The Metro corporation is following our recommendations, and different measures have to be taken at different stages of the project. They have to make a representation of having followed the necessary precautions at the different stages.
