A whistleblower who had recently exposed the water mafia in Chikkana Layout, Kaverinagar and surrounding areas, has been hospitalised after being assaulted by four armed men.
Kabeer has been admitted to Dr Ambedkar Hospital near DJ Halli. His ribs have been fractured.

He had alleged that Chikkana Layout had to endure erratic supply of water as Munavar, the man behind the water mafia, was in illegal possession of the valve key and supplied water elsewhere to earn huge money. DNA, in its edition dated June 18, had published a report (‘No water for you, but valve operators have enough to sell’) on the water mafia in Chikkana Layout and Kaverinagar.

Though the attack occurred on Sunday night, police were yet to take action against Munavar, who was allegedly behind the attack.
“We are fighting for  water that we pay for. I have been hit for no mistake. I was hurt from head to toe. They floored me and stamped me. They also beat my sons Tausif and Tanhir. By the time police came, the attackers escaped,” Kabeer said. He said that Munavar’s sons had first come to his house on Saturday in search of him. “But I wasn’t there, and they left, only to return on Sunday. Four men with cricket bats and wickets came at midnight and started shouting my name. As soon as I stepped out, they dragged me down and hit me,” said Kabeer.

“We are worried. The attackers have warned that they will be coming again to hit everybody in the group, anyone who raises a voice against the man has reason to fear,” said Ayesha, a resident of the area.

Kabeer identified three of the four attackers as Jaffer, Riyan, and Aidraz. Admitting that a case was filed regarding the incident, Devara Jeevana Halli police said they would take serious action. “A police complaint has been registered and the no is 201/2011. The victim has confirmed that there is some grievous injury caused due to the assault. We will surely take serious action once he gets discharged,” said Ganesh, sub-inspector of Devara Jeevana Halli police station.
