Work on the expansion of Terminal 1 of the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) began a fortnight ago, and is set to continue for 18 months. Traffic diversion and long queues in front of the departure terminal and baggage handling areas could become more common, as construction proceeds.

The Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), the promoter of the airport, in order to tackle these inevitable hardships, has planned that alternative arrangements will be made, as construction progresses, to reduce inconvenience to passengers.
BIAL announced that the construction phases have been planned keeping in view the 24X7 operations of the existing terminal.

Alternative routes, walkways with necessary signage and safety and security installations have all been planned, so that movement of passengers and baggage continues smoothly even as construction work is undertaken.

“Passenger experience and convenience will be dealt with, by ensuring best practice for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). In addition, the Bengaluru International Airport website will display maps and adequate signage at the airport will provide advance information on diversions or closures due to the construction,” an official said.

The terminal expansion is set to cost `1,000 crore. Once the expansion is completed, the airport will be equipped to handle 17 million passengers a year. Currently, it handles 10.6 million passengers a year. The expanded Terminal 1 will spread over an area of approximately 1,34,000 sq m; the existing size of the terminal is 72,000 sq m.

The airport’s air side too will be expanded, and taxiways and boarding gates will be upgraded to ‘Code F’ capability. That would enable A380 flights to operate from the Bengaluru International Airport.
