It seems the law does not apply to cops, who, at times, behave like thugs. A police constable hit an auto-rickshaw driver for no mistake of him, leading to a half-an-hour protest by auto-rickshaw drivers at City Market on Sunday morning.

Saddique, 30, was allegedly beaten by police constable Gunadal just for seeing an accident victim out of curiosity. Saddique was on the way to drop his passenger to his destination from City Market about 9.30 pm.

He found a gathering of more than 15-20 people in front of Ganesha temple, 100 metres away from City Market towards Town Hall. The crowd had gathered to see a man who fell from a scooter and sustained minor injuries while travelling with his son, resulting in slow traffic movement.

Siddique stopped his auto-rickshaw to see what the issue was, as the traffic was slowing down. Gunadal, working with City Market police station, asked him to leave the place.

“Gunadal asked me to leave the spot in rude words, but I kept my patience and told him I would move,” said Siddique.

“Gunadal could not wait for me to move. He abused me again. Then I asked why he was using foul language. He then hit me on my head with his walkie-talkie,” he added.

“Siddique was bleeding when I reached the spot and we staged a protest for more than 30 minutes,” said Syed Manam, another auto-rickshaw driver. By then, senior police officers reached the spot and sent Siddique to hospital for treatment.

‘Driver showed aggression’
However, jurisdictional assistant commissioner of police, Shourie, said Siddique hit Gunadal’s Cheetah motorcycle, leading to a heated argument between them.

Shourie added that Gunadal did not deliberately hit Siddique with the walkie-talkie. He said Gunadal had held the device in his hand and it just accidentally hit the auto driver when the policeman was gesticulating.
