Namma Metro is going to be pedestrian-friendly too. In a talk held last week, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) chief N Sivasailam said footpaths, subways and utility outlets would be built 500 metres around all metro stations, so passengers can alight from the metro and walk around safely. Sivasailam said metro would commence work on making spaces beautiful for pedestrians after getting approval from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

“We will construct footpaths and subways around stations after the major constructions are over,” said BLY Chavan, spokesman of BMRCL. Terminal stations of each of the five parts of the corridors will have parking facilities, and safe walkways will be provided so passengers can reach feeder bus stops safely.
Sivasailam said a proposal had been sent to the BBMP in this regard, and the Palike had responded positively. However, top Palike officials seemed clueless.

Meanwhile, sources said the department of urban land transport (DULT) had already started working on the maps of possible footpaths and subways around each of the stations in Phase 1 of the metro project.

Most of the metro stations, coming up either overhead or underground, are situated in busy roads or commercial zones, and it will be hard for the BMRCL to restore the roads and spots that have been affected by metro construction.

The BMRCL has already planned to renovate the boulevard of MG Road after work on MG Road and Trinity Circle stations is completed and track work is officially confirmed safe after extensive trial runs. Tenders have been called, and the cost is expected to be well over the Rs5 crore earlier budgeted for this work.
