The controversy surrounding the death of sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande was raised in the assembly on Friday. Members of the BJP pressed for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, besides transfer of inspector general of police (north eastern range) Mohammad Wazir Ahmed.

The BJP members staged a dharna in the assembly, which made speaker Kagodu Thimmappa adjourn the house for half-an-hour. Soon after the Question Hour, opposition leader Jagadish Shettar raised the issue.

Shettar demanded a CBI probe into the death of sub-inspector Mallikarjun, who succumbed to bullet injuries he sustained in a shootout with contract killer Munna Darbadar.

Blaming the government’s negligence for the death of Bande, Shettar raised suspicions over the role of IGP Wazir Ahmed in the incident. “Since serious allegations are levelled against the IGP, the case should be handed over to the CBI for an impartial inquiry. We cannot expect the CID inquiry to be impartial since the investigating agency is in the clutches of top IPS officers in the state,” Shettar said.

He added that Bande’s wife has levelled serious charges against the IGP. “She said the IGP was harassing Bande for the past six months. The government’s reluctance to transfer the IGP indicates its intention to protect the top cop. The government must take note of the IGP’s alleged role in excluding 11 rowdies of a particular community from rowdy-sheeter list,” he said.

The chief minister asserted that his government was not protecting the IGP and that a notice has been issued to him for a statement on elected representatives. “We will take action against the guilty as soon as the CID submits the report,” he said.

Home minister KJ George assured the house that strict action would be taken against the guilty. When the house reassembled, the BJP members continued the dharna, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house for Monday.
