Bangalore city might be high on technical skills and software expertise but, there surely seems to be a shortfall of design skills, or so startup experts feel. Julien Berthomier and Nellie Horn of Seedstars World, a startup competition for emerging markets, feel the design expertise in Bangalore is not as high as the technology and software talent.

"The IT expertise here is very high. There are talented people in Bangalore with design skills, but now designers and techies need to collaborate to bring out better innovative products and solutions, and to attract investors," said Horn, head of Seedstars 2014, which was recently held in Bangalore, and witnessed 20 startups participating.

Experts say Bangalore, which sees about 500-600 new ventures shaping up annually, is seeing maximum action in sectors like e-commerce, education, mobile applications, and recruiting, "with new ventures starting off on a regular basis," said Berthomier.

"There are a lot of ideas flowing in Bangalore. The ideas generally address domestic problems by creating specific solutions and services," said Horn. Bangalore was ranked 19th amongst the world's top startup ecosystems, by Startup Genome, which focuses on entrepreneurial ventures.

However experts feel for startups from Bangalore to take on a global outlook, they need to start addressing issues that concern a global audience. Currently, most startups are bringing out solutions that address the Indian market, which itself is very huge, said Horn.

"Not just India, but even markets like North America, Europe look for products and solutions that are affordable, accessible and reliable. However, there is lot of opportunity in the Indian market that needs to be tapped," believes Berthomier.

Experts say various stakeholders including Nasscom etc are trying to create a startup ecosystem in the city, by starting warehouses for young entrepreneurs to work from, providing accelerator programmes, mentorship and access to investors; all which is needed for startups to succeed.

"More needs to be done to get investors and to further build up the startup ecosystem," said Horn.
