Four policemen, including an inspector, have been suspended for allegedly extorting Rs3 lakh from a habitual offender by threatening to implicate him.

The police inspector of HAL police station Rajesh, constables Bheem Singh, Venkatesh and Dinesh have been suspended.

Police said Javed, a resident of Begur, had approached DCP (South East) TD Pawar and filed a complaint, accusing the HAL police staff of extorting him. He said the policemen recently threatened him that they would frame him in a case if he did not pay them Rs3 lakh.

“A preliminary internal probe revealed that the cops did receive Rs3 lakh. Based on that, the DCP submitted a report to the police commissioner, who ordered for their suspension,” the police said.

Javed was involved in a criminal case registered in HAL police station a few years ago. The police said he refrained after his conviction. While the four policemen have been suspended for the time being, they will be interrogated regarding the allegation once the department inquiry is over and the report is ready.
