The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is rubbing its hands in glee at the imminent return of the pay and park system in the city, and hopes to net Rs 30 crore a year.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday had in a written reply to MC Nanaiah and M Srinivas (Janata Dal-S) in the Legislative Council, stated that steps would soon be taken to introduce a new pay-and-park system in the city, nine years after it was scrapped.

The BBMP council has already approved the new parking policy, drafted by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport and sent it to the government for approval. The new parking policy has categorised the Central Business District and other premium locations into three parking zones—A, B and C—and stipulated separate fee for different category of vehicles in each of them.
Package A is meant for premium parking, package B for business areas and package C for others.

In package A, the fee for four-wheelers is Rs30 per hour and Rs15 for two-wheelers. In package B, four-wheelers are charged Rs20 per hour, and two-wheelers Rs10. In Package C, four-wheelers will be charged Rs15 per hour, while two-wheelers will be charged Rs5.

“We have to take people’s views before taking a decision on the quantum of fee collected for parking vehicles,” MS Shivaprasad, chairman, standing committee on taxation and finance, BBMP, told dna.

He said the arrangements would be made to float tenders as soon as the BBMP receives nod from urban development department. “We will pursue the matter with the authorities concerned and request them to complete the formalities to enable the BBMP to introduce the pay and park system in the city,’’ said Dr Shivaprasad.

Dr MN Srihari, traffic expert, said that roads were meant for traffic and footpaths for pedestrians. “Allowing parking of vehicles on the roads is not a good idea since most roads are narrow. I want the BBMP to have multi-level parking facility at important locations in the city,” said Srihari.
