Palace Road is one of the main arterial roads of Bangalore. Yet, when one reaches Raj Bhavan Road, next to Basaveshwara Circle, and thinks either of turning left to make for the airport, or heading straight for Mount Carmel College, there’s a disaster waiting to happen.

The road at the junction which is one of the most chaotic, has eroded to such an extent that motorists are forced to suddenly cut down on speed or turn right into the path of an overtaking vehicle.

Residents, especially from High Point nearby, have expressed their disgust about the maintenance of the roads here. “The poor condition of the road is one of the main reason accidents taking place here,” said Samir Reddy, an IT professional.

Joel D’souza, an engineering student, said, “These unmaintained roads cause a lot of problems for students like me who travel long distances to get to our colleges. The authorities need to take an initiative to maintain the roads.”

“This is one of the roads that needs to be repaired as it causes a lot inconvenience especially when the school (Sophia’s) opens or closes,” said Jyothi Nair, a BPO employee. Vijay Kumar, High Grounds traffic police inspector, said the situation becomes worse when it rains and the eroded part of the road — which is a huge pothole — fills up with water. Two wheeler riders are the worst hit in this case.

Surya Narayana, head constable on duty here, said, “The traffic jams are caused due to the bad roads as vehicles slow down. Four wheelers usually have a better grip on the road, whereas two wheeler riders need to be extremely careful while riding here.”

“We are aware of the bad conditions of the road and we will continue our work as soon as the weather conditions in the city improve, till then I request the people to co-operate with us,” said M Gopi, corporator, Sampangiram Nagar.

But the corporator may do well to note that the road has been in this condition from well before the monsoon.
