Maruti Suzuki drives in new WagonR

Maruti Suzuki India on Wednesday launched a new version of its hatchback WagonR at a starting price of Rs 4.19 lakh (ex-showroom) going up to Rs 5.69 lakh, which will compete with the likes of Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago.

The third generation WagonR comes with a new 1.2 litre petrol engine option along with another choice of 1 litre powertrain. In this segment, WagonR is the third model from Maruti to get the auto gear shift technology, apart from Celerio and Alto K10.

The one litre manual versions of new WagonR are priced at Rs 4.19 lakh and Rs 4.69 lakh, while the automated gear shift trim is tagged at Rs 5.16 lakh. The 1.2-litre variants are priced between Rs 4.89 lakh and Rs 5.69 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). Santro and Tiago are priced between Rs 3.9 lakh and Rs 5.64 lakh.

The new model also boasts of features including driver airbag, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, speed alerts and rear sensors etc.

The company said it has already received 12,000 bookings for the model. Since the first launch in 1999, it has sold 2.2 million units. The model continues to feature among the top-five best-selling cars in India for nearly two decades.

Maruti Suzuki India's managing director and chief executive officer Kenichi Ayukawa said the company expects the all-new WagonR to become a preferred choice just not for families but also for young buyers.

The new WagonR, which is based on Suzuki's fifth generation HEARTECT platform, is wider and longer than its outgoing version. The boot capacity has almost doubled up to 341 litre from the earlier version.

According to the company, the new WagonR with one-litre engine will deliver a fuel efficiency of 22.5 km per litre, while the bigger 1.2 litre petrol powertain would return efficiency of 21.5 km per litre. The fuel efficiency in the new version is higher by 10% than the outgoing model, the company said.
