Hours after he was appointed as the Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda said he would work to strengthen the party’s organisation ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

A four-term MLA from Anklav constituency, Chavda, 42, is the youngest person to be appointed president of Gujarat Congress. Arjun Modhwadia, who was 54 when he led the party in Gujarat in 2011, was the previous youngest.

“I am thankful to the party for the trust shown in me. Under the leadership of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, I will work hard to give voice to people’s issues,” Chavda said in his first reactions after he was appointed as Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president.

Chavda is a cousin of Bharatsinh Solanki, whom he replaced as party president. He, however, clarified that it was his performance as MLA, and not his family ties, that had led the party to hand him the responsibility. The MLA said that he would make the necessary changes to strengthen the party organisation. “I will work closely with all senior leaders, and with leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani to prepare the road map for the coming elections,” he said. Though only 42, Chavda is already in his fourth term as MLA. He was first elected to the assembly in 2004 by-elections, and also won in 2007, 2012 and in 2017 elections. He hails from a political family, and his grandfather was also a parliamentarian. He is also connected with various educational institutions and cooperative bodies.

Congress leaders welcomed the appointment saying it would help in attracting youths to the party. “His appointment as Gujarat Congress president is a good move ahead of 2019 general elections, as it will help the party woo not only OBCs, but also the youth,” said a Congress office bearer.
