The state government was in for a shock after around 1,000 state government officials failed to file their property returns (APRs) before the due date. The responses the government received in response to the show cause notices were rather bizarre; most of them said they were caught up in calculating their properties which is why it took them longer.

A senior official in the state government said, “All the officials have responded to the show cause notices and have filed the annual property returns thereafter. Most of them said they took the time filing the return as they could not calculate the total worth of the property they possess. This is quite surprising as it seems that they possess properties disproportionate to their income, but the figures they put in the APR said otherwise.” The senior official also added that it was the first time state government officials filed their APR, so it is obvious for them to be confused about how the system works.

The Gujarat government has made it mandatory for all senior officials (Class I and II) to file their annual property return mentioning the total worth of their assets by March 31. However, more than 1,000 officials overlooked it and did not file their APRs in due time. This infuriated Chief Secretary Dr JN Singh and he slammed all the defaulters and asked them to produce show cause notices, warning them of a departmental inquiry for failing to do so.

THE REASONS

Officials were asked to file APRs immediately. Some of them said they were on sick leaves, transferred to distant locations, changes in property rates after GST, lack of technical know-how, among other reasons, added the official.
