A woman was bludgeoned to death at her home. The ghastly incident occurred at her home on Ashram Road right in the heart of the city. According to Naranpura police, the 64-year-old Satnamkaur Indrajitsingh Nathani was found lying in a pool of blood by her neighbours at Abhivruddhi apartment behind Navgujarat College around 11 am.

Following the death of her husband a few years back, Nathani had been living alone in house No. 6 on the first floor. She has a son and two daughters. While son Pratap lives in Mumbai, one daughter stays in Nagpur and the other, Taruna, stays with her husband at Goyal Plaza in Bodakdev. Taruna used to call her up, without fail, regularly around 9 am. But, on Friday, the latter did not pick up the phone. Though Taruna tried again after a gap of two hours, still there was no response.

“When she did not reply, relatives got anxious and asked Nathani’s neighbour to go to her house and check. When a neighbour approached the house, she found the door open. Ass soon as she stepped inside, she found Nathani lying on the floor,” said JB Agravat, police sub-inspector of Naranpura.

After learning about her mother’s death, Taruna informed the Naranpura police, who arrived with forensic experts. Investigation revealed that Nathani was killed with a hammer, which was also found from the spot. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the murderer hit her on the head with the hammer before strangling her with a dupatta to make sure that she was dead,” said Agravat.

While checking the house, several cupboards open, which proved that the murder had been committed to loot the place. According to the police, some cash and gold ornaments were missing. Since no one else stays in the house, the police found it difficult to ascertain the exact amount of the loot. However, Taruna’s in-laws claimed that the killers had fled with Rs1 lakh cash kept in the cupboard and a gold chain worn by the woman.

The police claimed that since Nathani had spoken to Taruna last on Thursday afternoon, Nathani was murdered between Thursday evening and Friday morning. Also, as there was no sign of any forced entry, the suspect could be someone who knew Nathani or whom she trusted. The culprits might have killed her before looting the place. While talking to the police, Narthani’s relatives, too, hinted at the same. According to Taruna, her mother had been planning to fix a broken glass window and claimed to have informed a technician recently to fix it.

So, it could be possible that the technician made a friendly entry into the house on Thursday evening and killed the woman with his hammer, which technicians usually carry, before looting the house. The police, however, have not revealed anything yet about their line of investigation.
