Along with devotion and worship, politics has also entered into Navratri celebrations this year in Surat. Besides traditional dresses, jewellery and huge set-up at venues, one thing is visible at many places – NaMo masks and tattoo.

Masks of NaMo (Narendra Modi) are a big hit among young revelers in the city. Besides commercial venues, good number of revellers can be found adoring NaMo masks at sheri garbas’. Along with boys, girls too can be seen dancing wearing NaMo masks. Fact is that revelers purchase these masks and are not distributed by saffron party, is a noteworthy one.

“To add some charm in our celebration this year, we decided to use NaMo masks. We purchased masks from market and distributed it to our residents. There is no political agenda behind this,” said Swapan Shah, a resident of Bhatar.

According to Shah, residents were little uncomfortable to dance wearing masks, on first two days.

They felt that it would dilute festive spirit. However, later they accepted it.

NaMo tattoos are popular among revellers, who adorn ethnic wear and mostly dance at commercial venues. Girls are ahead from boys in getting NaMo tattoos. Tattoos have different message like Narendra Mod: PM -2014, Narendra Modi Can Bring Difference and others.

“Compared to tattoos bearing social message, NaMo tattoos are a hit these year among revellers. Tattoo depicting NaMo as PM in 2014 is most popular among revellers,” said Darshan Gohil, a city based tattoo artist.

According to Gohil, on an average 8-9 youths visit his shop daily to prepare tattoo on NaMo. A NaMo tattoo takes one hour to get completed.

Revellers term NaMo tattoos as ‘added attraction’ in their navratri.

“All my group members get tattoo in their body during navratri. We always select themes that are popular during that period. Currently, Narendra Modi is talk of town and so we decided to get his tattoo,” Sneha Patel, a reveller, said.
