It was indeed a joyous week for 128 differently abled Amdavadis as they landed jobs in various companies across the city.

As part of the ongoing ‘Joy of Giving’ week, the Blind People’s Association (BPA) along with Sarthak Educational Trust (Delhi) organised a three-day event called ‘Joy of Employment’ for differently abled people at their campus which ended on Saturday. However, compared to last year the number has gone down by 72 jobs.

“Promoting employment of such people is very important as it gives them economic independence,” said BPA executive director Bhupesh Punani. This year — fifth edition of the event the turnout of employers at the job fair was remarkably low as compared to last year. Hence, the number of people getting employment was also low, said BPA employment officer Ramesh Patel.

The first day of the event was focussed on demonstrating the abilities of differently abled people.

Around 20 employers attended the meeting of which only 15 turned up for the face-to-face interview round.

The assessment and orientation to gauge the best suited roles and responsibilities based on their calibre and education on Friday helped 128 persons secure a job.

Patel said: “Last year, as many as 25 companies participated in the event where 200 people managed to land a job. Some of the employers have said they might recruit a bunch of people later as currently there are no vacancies.”

The type of jobs offered varied from data entry to customer service, lift men, factory workers, accountant, petrol pump workers, service at café among others.

According to Patel, the basic requirement employers looked for in their prospective employees were computer skills and basic education. Employers from fields like construction, designing, fast-food chains, hospitality, BPO, IT and bakery participated in the event.

The employment fair — which is now part of the Joy of Giving week — used to be held on the World Disability Day (December 3) prior to 2012.

The BPA will also host a charity event, ‘Food for Change’ on Sunday, where NGOs from the city will invite donors to an evening of gourmet food and music to raise funds for various social causes.
