If things go to plan, Gujarat University would have its new registrar by next week. A team, comprising in-charge vice chancellor (V-C), syndicate members and faculties, interviewed six candidates for the job at the GU headquarters here on Thursday. The varsity had received eight applications for the post, but only six candidates appeared for the interview.

In-charge V-C Mukul Shah said the candidates were competent and they expected to finalise the registrar’s name within three to four days. “This year, we followed the marking system. The candidates were rated on the basis of qualification, subject knowledge, general knowledge and understanding of the university Act. These contained 80% marks, while the remaining 20% were for personality and presentation,” he pointed out. “The candidates were better than the ones that appeared for the previous round of interviews,” Shah added.

One should not be surprised if a BJP-backed candidate is appointed to the post. Because the team that took the interviews included Shah, a BJP member, party heavyweight Narhari Amin and former mayor and corporator Amit Shah, besides three faculty representatives.

This is the second time that the university conducted an interview for the registrar’s post.

Authorities had invited applications thrice. And, if the appointment is made, then the university would have a full-time registrar after almost a decade.

At least four university officials have been assigned the charge of a registrar in the last two years.

Political influence in decision making is believed to be the reason behind the in-charge registrar shirking the additional responsibility.
