The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leaving no stone unturned to achieve its ambitious target of winning 150-plus of the 182 seats up for grabs in the Gujarat Assembly elections due later next month. So much so that national president Amit Shah has told party workers there will no victory processions if the party fails to reach the magic number by even one seat.
“Shah was clear that the party has to slog to meet the 150 plus target. He went a step further and told the party members across the state that there won’t be victory processions even if BJP is unable to win 150 plus seats,’’ Sanat Modi, president of the Bhavnagar city unit of BJP, told DNA.
Shah has also sought tighter coordination between office bearers and grassroots workers instead of relying merely on data.
To meet the stiff target he has set, the party has launched a massive exercise to cover almost all 35,000 booths by holding at least three rounds of visits by the assigned leaders. Ministers from the state cabinet as well as from BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have been deployed to supervise the party’s machinery down to the booth level.
“Our party chief has asked party leaders and cadre at the grassroots not be complacent but be pro-active to retain BJP’s supremacy in the Assembly,” Modi, said.
Saying Shah’s message of ‘Pull up your socks or perish’ was clear, Modi said the party president’s ‘Get Out the Vote’ formula of reaching out to every name on every page of the voters’ list has been strictly followed in all 182 constituencies.
“The BJP has appointed a chief for each page who bears responsibility for getting every voter on that page out to vote on polling day,’’ he said.
BJP leader Yogeshbhai Pandya from Surendranagar district said all district unit leaders have completed meeting voters at the booth, block, and circle levels. ‘’Their job was to list a slew of pro-development decisions implemented by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre and the party-led government in Gujarat to counter opposition’s criticism,’’ he said.
