The state Cabinet approved the 10 per cent quota in government jobs and educational institutions for the economically weaker sections of society in its weekly meeting on Wednesday, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said.

Patel said that in the wake of the central government's announcement of granting 10 per cent quota for the impoverished sections of non-reserved communities earlier this month, the state government had decided to extend the quota benefit to youths having an annual family income of up to Rs 8 lakh.

The deputy chief minister said that unlike the central government, which had announced that those owning residential flats or plots beyond a certain size would not be entitled to the 10 per cent reservation benefit, the state government had fixed only an income cap as a sole criterion.

"Any youth belonging to a non-reserved community having annual family income of less than Rs 8 lakh will be eligible for getting the reservation benefit. The government will issue a formal notification in this regard soon," he told reporters.

He clarified that the candidate's income, as also the incomes of his/her parents, and of brothers and sisters aged 18 years and above would be considered as being part of the family income. He said income derived from service, agriculture, business or any other source would all be taken into consideration to decide eligibility.

The deputy chief minister also said that as in the case of reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, 33 per cent of seats reserved for the economically weaker sections would be set aside for women. "The 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections would be a part of any recruitment the state government does from now onwards," Patel added.

The Centre had announced a 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections of the population last month. Parliament approved the constitutional amendment for the quota during the Winter Session earlier this month, and it received the President's assent on January 13.
