After farmers and industries, the cut in Narmada water canal supply is now about to hit the Ahmedabad citizens. On Tuesday, Jagdish Patel, city engineer, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced that with immediate effect, the city will get 10 per cent less water daily.

On Tuesday, the city received 200 Million Liter per Day (MLD) less water than its usual supply of 800 MLD from the Narmada canal. "Because of this, with immediate effect, on an average, 10 per cent less water was given to the city on Tuesday," said Patel, adding, "As a precaution, we have also suspended two intake wells and four french wells."

Currently, the city gets its water from the Narmada canal and Shedhi canal. On an average, it needs about 1,200 MLD water, and the implementation of water cut is reported to affect the entire city and not any particular pocket. "Now we are looking for other options so that people don't face too much trouble. With the summer season a few weeks away, we have to find alternate ways," said Ramesh Desai, chairman water and sewage committee, AMC.

Meanwhile, former leader of opposition, Badruddin Shaikh said, "In spite of having a 'smart city' tag, it is really sad that the civic authority is not providing basic amenities to its citizens."
