Fancy bamboo furniture? Well, now one can easily find beds, sofas and dining tables made from bamboo with the Surat’s forest department setting up a unit at Mandvi for manufacturing bamboo furniture. The department has set up the unit in collaboration with a non governmental organisation (NGO).

The first of its kind unit has been developed at Visdalia village, near Mandvi town in Surat district.

Along with a massive workshop for preparing furniture, the unit also houses a retail space for selling those items. The unit was inaugurated recently at the hands of governor, Dr Kamla and has begun production.

Developed at cost of Rs55 lakh, of which the department and the state government bore 40 % of the expense each, while 20 % of the cost was borne by an Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, an NGO initiative.

“To create awareness regarding the use of bamboo, we have developed the unit. Furniture prepared from bamboo is not just beautiful, but strong, affordable and has a longer life. Again, it will also help in generating employment and boosting rural economy,” said A Vasava, DFO (Surat).

According to Vasava, golden coloured bamboos will be used for making furniture as it is found in large quantities in South Gujarat.

The forest department gave training to locals for three months to get skilled workers for the unit.

An agency was also hired by the department for the job and now, which has trained more than 100 workers till now.

Bamboo round the year
According to the forest department, golden bamboo will be used for preparing furniture. Though the South Gujarat region has ample bamboo population, the forest department has planned massive bamboo plantation to get raw material round the year. Local farmers will be given bamboo seeds for free, while bamboo will be planted on open and barren lands.
