Maharashtra turned out to be the worst performing state in the first-ever National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to all under-graduate medical colleges as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced its results on Wednesday.
Although the largest number of candidates appeared for this test (held last month on May 5) from Maharashtra, barely 35 % of them could qualify for admission.
According to the data released by the CBSE, over 95,000 candidates took NEET from Maharashtra, of which only 33,964 figured among the meritorious students. The qualifying criteria for the general category students was 50 percentile and for the reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC) was 40 percentile.
Maharashtra therefore is at the bottom of the pile with its performance being worse than all north-eastern states including Tripura which registered a pass percentage of 36.8 % and Arunachal Pradesh with qualifying percentage of 42 %.
Even states as large and populous as Maharashtra such as Uttar Pradesh, which saw 57 % of its total candidates passing this exam, have done better.
For CBSE officials, such abysmal performance cannot be attributed to any particular reason. “This isn't much of a surprise because candidates from Maharashtra usually did not perform too well even when we were conducting the AIPMT (All India Pre-Medical Test),” said a senior Board official who did not wish to be identified.
The qualified candidates will now have to fulfill formalities with their respective counselling authorities such as DGHS, medical education directorates of states, AFMC, institutions and universities, for admission to MBBS/BDS courses.
The NEET-UG was conducted by CBSE for admission to all under-graduate medical colleges across the country. This was the first-ever such exam conducted across the country.
