62-year-old Jagmohan Thakur, who allegedly murdered his wife in their Vashi flat on Sunday night, was suffering from depression and had been undergoing treatment for the same since two years, a senior police officer said.

He was arrested by the police from sector 2, Vashi, on Monday evening as soon as he entered the place after roaming around Vasai, Virar, and other peripheral areas. Thakur has been booked under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the Belapur sessions court on Monday, and has been remanded to police custody till October 14.

Laxman Kale, senior police inspector of Vashi police station confirmed that the accused was under tremendous pressure as the bank he worked with had started some departmental enquiry against him. “Jagmohan retired as a manager with the Punjab National Bank (Colaba branch) around two years ago. He messed up while working with the bank, and they initiated some enquiry against him a couple of months ago. However, we don’t have much idea about it as the bank did not register any police complaint against the accused,” he said.

After retirement, Thakur decided to go back and settle down at his native place in Himachal Pradesh. He insisted that his wife, Asha, accompany him, but she was reluctant as she wanted to be with her son and daughter-in-law in Vashi. This led to frequent quarrels between the couple.

“Late on Sunday night, the couple began fighting over the same issue. An infuriated Jagmohan assaulted Asha first, and then hit her with a hammer on her head. When Asha started screaming in pain, Thakur strangulated her with a nylon rope, changed his clothes, and left home. All this happened while the couple’s son Tushar and daughter-in-law Kirti were sleeping in the other room,” said Sangeeta Alphonso, police inspector of Vashi police station.

The police recovered his blood-stained clothes, the nylon rope, and the hammer from the spot of the murder. The CCTV cameras in his building captured him while he was fleeing in the wee hours of Monday.

Around 7.30pm on Monday, Thakur’s mobile phone was traced in Vashi.

“We circulated his photographs among our officials, and his son was co-ordinating with us throughout the day too. We spotted him in sector 2 in Vashi and arrested him,” she said.
