A women safety programme under the Nirbhaya fund will soon be rolled out in metro cities with features like transit dormitories for women and children, LED streetlights, forensic and cybercrime cells to assist in cases of crimes against women. It also plans to get more police patrol teams out on the streets.

An amount worth Rs 3,000 crore was sanctioned for the programme which will start its operations in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, sources said.

The 'Nirbhaya Fund' was set up in 2013 following the brutal gang rape and killing of a girl in the Capital that triggered a national outrage. The fund is to be used to put in place mechanisms to enhance safety of women across the country.

Under the programme, Rs 663.67 crore has been earmarked for Delhi, Rs 252 crore for Mumbai, Rs 425.06 crore for Chennai, Rs 253 crore for Ahmedabad, Rs 181.32 crore for Kolkata, Rs 667 crore for Bengaluru, Rs 282.50 crore for Hyderabad, and Rs 195 crore for Lucknow, officials said.

The various projects planned to make cities safer for women involve Ministries of Home, Women and Child Development, Urban Development, and Electronics and Information Technology as well as respective municipal and police commissioners.

The cost of the project would be shared between the Central government (from Nirbhaya fund) and respective states in 60:40 ratio.

For Delhi which has witnessed several such incidents in the recent past, the Home Ministry has kept aside an additional amount of Rs 240.11 crore.
