In a surprising turn of events, pacer Naveen-ul-Haq, a member of the Afghanistan squad for the upcoming World Cup, has revealed significant news regarding his future in the 50-over format. Taking to Instagram, the pacer announced his retirement from this format after the ODI World Cup.

Naveen acknowledged that this decision was not an easy one, but he believes it will ultimately contribute to the longevity of his playing career.

“It has been an absolute honour to represent my country would like to announce my retirement from ODI format at end of this World Cup and will continue to wear this blue jersey in t20 cricket for my country it hasn’t been an easy decision to make but to prolong my playing career had to take this tough decision would like to thank @afghanistancricketboard. And all my fans for their support and unwavering love,” wrote Naveen along with a photo of him in the Afghanistan jersey.

Naveen, who was not initially selected for the Afghanistan squad in the Asia Cup, has now been called back for the upcoming World Cup in India, set to begin on October 5. In addition to his national team commitments, the 24-year-old has made a name for himself in various franchise leagues around the world.

During the previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Naveen made headlines for his on-field clash with Virat Kohli, adding to his reputation as a formidable player.

Although Naveen has only played in seven One Day Internationals (ODIs), he has managed to take 14 wickets with an impressive average of 25.42. His ODI debut took place in Mirpur against Bangladesh in 2016, and his most recent appearance was against Ireland in Abu Dhabi in 2021.
