After more than a month of flip-flops and denials, Pakistan has admitted that Mohammed Ajmal Amir aka Kasab, the lone terrorist to be captured alive during the 26/11 strikes, is its national.
Barely 24 hours after laughing off the evidence given by India, foreign office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq confirmed that Ajmal is indeed a Pakistani. But sources said there were few chances of Pakistan either seeking counsellor access to Ajmal or giving him legal aid.
Information minister Sherry Rehman too confirmed that enquiries have revealed that Ajmal was from Faridkot in Depalpur district of Punjab.
Earlier, GeoTV quoted National Security Adviser Mahmood Ali Durrani as saying Ajmal had been identified as a Pakistani. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani later sacked Durrani, saying the NSA didn’t take him into confidence before making the statement and his “remarks had brought bad name to Pakistan”.
Enquiries revealed Ajmal’s full name as Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, s/o Mohammad Amir Kasab, born on July 13, 1987.
