It was a bad day in office for Rohit Sharma. He not only saw his team lose against the arch-rivals Maharashtra, but was also fined the entire match fee by Match Referee Prakash Bhatt for using obscene language in their last match of the Mushtaq Ali Cup West Zone T20 cricket championship at the Poona Club on Saturday. He was found guilty of breaching Level II of the ICC’s Code of Conduct.

Sharma, who was run out for the second time at the same venue in two days, was seen abusing a spectator when the spectator allegedly advised him to improve his running between the wickets before coming down to bat. This happened when Sharma was returning back to the pavilion after he was dismissed by Kiran Adhav’s direct hit, while stealing a cheeky single.

Incidentally, Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer was at the non-striker’s end on both the occasions. Sharma was out in a similar fashion against Saurashtra on Thursday.
As he entered the pavilion, Sharma kicked the chair and later threw his bat, showing his displeasure. “This is a gentleman’s game and such things will never be tolerated,” said one of the officials at the venue on condition of anonymity.

This was not for the first time that a Mumbai player has been booked. In their match against Baroda at Deccan Gymkhana, skipper Wasim Jaffer — along with Pinal Shah — were warned for violating the Code of Conduct.

Meanwhile, Harshad Khadiwale’s fireworks helped Maharashtra humble Mumbai by 10 runs. Khadiwale’s swashbuckling knock of 75 helped the hosts piling up 177 for five and then took two important wickets to reduce Mumbai to 167 for eight.

Brief scores: Maharashtra 177-5 (H Khadiwale 75) bt Mumbai 166-8 (A Raut 43; Sajid Suresh Nath 3-31)
