It was a good day for the hosts as all the five Indian shuttlers qualified for the men’s main draw of the Tata Open India International Challenge here at the Cricket Club of India on Tuesday.
In a curtain raiser to the main event that begins on Wednesday, Mayank Behal, Jolly Prakash, Rohan Castelino, Nigel D’Sa and K Nandagopal advanced into the main round.
D’Sa was the only one who was made to go the distance by Thailand’s Matayanumati Siriwat before he finally won the the match 17-21 21-8 22-20.
Behal, Castelino and Nandagopal saw off their Nepalese opponents in quick time. Prakash’s opponent, Bangladeshi Uddin Md Rais, had a lot of support from the crowd but the Indian employed the smash shot to a good effect to see off the challenge.
The main action begins on Wednesday with top seed Yunus Alamysah facing Indian Aditya Prakash while second seed Ajay Jayaram will have a tricky opponent in Indonesian Arif Ramadhan. Another clash to look forward to will be Anup Sridhar taking on Misbun Ramdan, who is the son of the Malaysian national coach. In the women’s side of the draw, Indian hope Trupti Murgunde has a late match after receiving a bye in the first round.
