The Governing Council of the Indian Premier League has deferred its decision on the number of games in the league from next year.

At its meeting here on Friday, the members decided to take up the matter in September despite having unanimity on the need to reduce the number of matches drastically from the original number of 94. “We have decided to not have any discussion on the matter. It will be decided in September,” said IPL vice-chairman Niranjan Shah. In the run-up to the meeting, there were indications that the BCCI will settle for 73 or 74 matches.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, meanwhile, confirmed a DNA report of Rs40 crore loss incurred by it in IPL 2. “I cannot say it is a loss but yes, the expenditure for the league was about Rs39 crore more than IPL 1,” said a BCCI official. “The expenses had mounted as IPL 2 was held in South Africa.”

After the final analysis, it has emerged that the BCCI would have to shell out Rs 39 crore from its revenue to honour its commitment to distribute 70 per cent of the IPL revenue to state associations.

They will disburse Rs202 crore among 25 state associations while their surplus is only Rs 163 crore. “It is our commitment and we will honour it,” said an official.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has awarded series sponsorship rights to Bharti Airtel. The telecom giant bagged the rights by submitting a bid for Rs 3.33 crore per international fixture.

India are expected to play about 52 international matches at home and that means Airtel will have to shell out about Rs175 crore over a period of three years. This is the frim’s first major foray into Indian cricket after its failed bid to become the Indian team’s sponsor. Airtel is, of course, the title sponsor of the Champions League Twenty20.

Ten corporate houses, including other telecom brands like Idea and Aircel, and firms like Future Group, Hero Honda and Micromax, showed interest in bagging the rights.
